Case Study: UMB CURE

Pathways Education Solutions worked with high-school students in the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) CURE scholarship program to incorporate chat-bots into their research projects. The UMB CURE program provides research opportunities to high school students from underrepresented backgrounds in biomedical sciences.

Pathways Education Solutions provided the students with training in chat-bot development, teaching them how to build chat-bots using natural language processing tools and machine learning algorithms. The students were then given the opportunity to incorporate chat-bots into their research projects.

For example, one student developed a chat-bot to help educate consumers about allergens and provide restaraunt recommendations based on a users know allergies.  The chatbot was designed to help people with food allergies find safe and enjoyable dining options. It could provide information on allergens commonly found in different cuisines and suggest restaurants that cater to specific dietary needs. Users could chat with the bot and specify their food allergies, and the chat-bot would then recommend restaurants in their area that are safe and accommodating.

Through this project, the students gained valuable experience in AI and machine learning, as well as an understanding of how these technologies can be applied to real-world problems in biomedical research. Pathways Education Solutions is committed to empowering students with the skills they need to succeed in the future, and this collaboration with UMB CURE is an excellent example of how these skills can be applied to benefit society.
